Field Guide To Wyoming Grasses

Product Description

The taxonomy of the grasses of Wyoming has received considerable attention by researchers over the past six decades to the benefit of a myriad of students, ranchers, and resource managers. Most persistent in the effort has been my colleague Quentin Skinner, Professor Emeritus and Research Associate at the Rocky Mountain Herbarium (RM), colleges of Agriculture and Natural Resources and Arts and Sciences, respectively. This edition represents a major update of his "Grasses of Wyoming." The nomenclature has been updated but the classification at the tribal level is traditional for the sake of utility. Yet the greatest enhancement is the hundreds of color images of all grass taxa. These illustrate the habit, but more importantly, florets with associated bractlets, spikelets, inflorescences, and selected vegetative parts of each. Quentin is a master at macrophotography and the application of computer software, thus the extraordinary images. As an example, the hairs on the glumes of Alopecurus arundinaceus (photos, p. 139) required the painstaking removal of all pixels adjacent to each, thus providing a solid black background. In summary, this tome will provide a new standard for other researchers to emulate. NOT DISCOUNTABLE.
